"I've Been There Too" Is Not a USP But Here's What Actually Makes Wellness, Beauty + Skin Experts Stand Apart From The Competition + Build Buying Trust
There's a positioning pattern so common in the wellness and skin spaces that it's become almost invisible.
You experienced the thing your clients come to you with, trained in that approach and now help others through the same journey.
It’s not that your back story doesn’t matter. It’s just not enough of a differentiator on its own. Especially in the wellness and skin spaces, where it's on almost every website.
To stand apart from your competitors with similar back stories, you need to dig much deeper into what makes you different.
Why the Origin Story Became the Default
The personal journey narrative became dominant in wellness marketing for understandable reasons.
It builds empathy and credibility through lived experience. It creates connection with potential clients who recognise their own story in you. It answers the unspoken question "do you really understand what this feels like?" with something more convincing than a list of qualifications.
The problem is when the story becomes THE positioning.
Every wellness professional has a back story.
The vast majority of practitioners in the wellness, nutrition, skin and holistic health spaces came to their work through personal experience.
When ten practitioners have essentially the same origin story, it tells a potential client nothing about which one to choose.
The Difference Between Context and Positioning
Your origin story is context. It tells a potential client why you do this work, why you care and why you have a personal understanding of the challenges your clients navigate. But
But high intent clients aren’t asking: "why do you do this work?"
They’re asking: "why should I choose you over someone else who does similar work with similar credentials and a similar story."
Your positioning needs to go much deeper than your why.
It needs to make you the undeniable choice over others, especially competitors with similar origin stories.
Positioning That Gives Clients a Reason to Choose You
The goal of everything I've described in this post is a single, specific outcome.
A potential client lands on your website having already visited the websites of several other practitioners with similar credentials and similar stories. She reads your website copy and she finds something she didn't find on any of the others.
Not just warmth, empathy and the reassurance that you've been there too.
Strong positioning that tells her why she can’t get the same experience working with one of your competitors.
That's the positioning a ready-to-book client needs to choose you over your competitors.
Ready to Find Out What Your Real Differentiators Are?
If you're a wellness, beauty or skin professional whose positioning is mostly or solely focused on your origin story, it’s time to look deeper into what makes you different to your competitors.
